Minecraft has existed for over 14 years and has since become one of the most popular games ever made with over 300 million copies being sold. Because of this success, Minecraft has had many spin-off games over the years from Minecraft eartMinecraftcraft story mode which have all, in some sort of way, failed. And Today we're going to explore why all 5 of Minecraft spin-offs have either been discontinued, canceled, or have just faded into obscurity.
We're going to start out with a mobile game called Minecraft Earth, a Minecraft spin-off released in 2019 that was focused on augmented reality or AR technology where the player could create a Minecraft world and go out in the real world to collect new mobs, blocks, and structures, kinda like Pokemon go. Once players are done collecting new items and such players could do is use this AR technology to project their Minecraft world into real life, anywhere they go. At the time it was a very cool, new, and innovative concept, which is probably the reason why as soon as the game was announced, it grew a large audience of YouTubers, streamers, and just regular people because of how new this concept was, and due to it being a mobile game- it was accessible to almost everybody- this game was projected to be a huge success with it having millions of downloads just a few months after it was released with it being basically the only thing that the Minecraft community was talking about at the time. This would further be propelled with many YouTubers creating many promotional videos and events for this game, and from an outside perspective, it seemed like Minecraft Earth was here to stay.
But sadly, this could only be further from the truth as just a few months after it was released, Minecraft Earth began to quickly lose players as people would soon become disinterested in the gimmick of AR technology as well as the fact that the game just wasn't that entertaining for most players, it was cool for about 10 minutes until it just became boring and kinda dumb, mainly because its just a slightly more glitchy and more boring version of Minecraft mobile which caused the player count on this game to drop until basically no one was playing it. this was also because of many server issues on Mojang's end where players couldn't even log into the app with the game often being buggy and sometimes even unplayable with many players being locked out of their accounts, or just not being able to play, on top of the fact that the gimmick of AR technology was quickly coming to an end, and most players were just moving on to the new thing.
The declining player count and revenue coming from the game as well as many fatal internal server issues would eventually cause Mojang to pull the plug on this game officially shutting it down on June 30th, 2021 after only existing for a couple years.
For some people, and including me, it was sad to see this game go considering how innovative and new it was, but most people didnt really care.
This wasnt mojangs worst flop as we’re going to move on to Minecraft Dungeons being announced september 2018 with much excitement from the community as this was the second minecraft spin off ever made besides Minecraft storymode- the base idea of minecraft dungeons was a dungeon crawler story game where you could fight mobs, collect resources and upgrade your character- with an engaging storyline with many bosses and even an evil villan. considering the engaging storyline, well developed combat system and the games overall appeal, almost everyone thought that this game would end up being even more successful than Minecraft story mode with almost all minecraft youtubers making videos about the gam soon as it was announced. Even with all the hype surrounding the game- minecraft dungeons would slowly fade into obscurity after most players either, beating the game, getting bored or just stop playing. with there being only 500 active players by 2021, which by mojang standards, is horrible! This lackluster success would soon show through as Mojang hasn't updated this game since November 2022, rather, moving on to another spinoff of this game called minecraft legend! Stopping all promotion to minecraft dungeons, effectively killing it off. I'm still not sure why mojang decided to name it minecraft dungeons considering how different it is from minecraft, despite having “Minecraft” in the title- the game’s core mechanics and play-style are completely different, only maintaining the visual and enviornmental feel of minecraft, along with a couple other small features or elements of the game, other than that, it was a completely different game. Which when I come to think of it, having minecraft in the title was probably the only reason why it got any attention at all with most players of minecraft thinking that this game would be somewhat like minecraft- keeping many of the sandbox and creative aspects of the game, rather than getting a completely different game, developed on a completely different rendering engine with only some aspects of Minecraft remaining. Now I'm not hating on Minecraft dungeons, it is again, a very well-developed game with a great storyline- but it just doesn't fit in as a Minecraft spin-off because the main thing that made Minecraft so successful is the re-playability and creative aspects with there being almost no limits of what the player can build or accomplish. Minecraft Dungeons might’ve performed a little better in the long run if it was just its own separate standalone game. Maybe Mojang could’ve gotten more of the Minecraft player base over to Dungeons if they didn't slap the Minecraft logo on it, rather, just introduce it as another game made by Mojang that minecraft players may like. Now this may seem counterintuitive, as slapping the Minecraft logo on it is a really good advertising strategy but making Minecraft dungeons its own separate thing might make people think of it as less of just a Minecraft cash grab, and more of as just a well developed, standalone game. I'm just throwing out ideas at this point- maybe Minecraft dungeons was doomed from the start, maybe it could’ve been saved from obscurity somehow, who knows!
I mean, this game is completely dead as mojang does still do some small promotions for it- but I tit'sk its safe to say that this game isnt going to be relevant, any time soon…
Because of this lackluster success, mojang decided to develop a sort of sequel to minecraft dungeons, called minecraft legends, a sort of “extension” off of minecraft dungeons which has arguably performed even worse by some metrics with there being little to no community excitement upon with its announcement, in 2023, this would further be proven with lackluster sales with only 40,000 copies of this game being sold as well as it having a very small active playerbase of under 100 people, compared to minecraft, which consistently averages hundreds of thousands of active player. This probably because minecraft legends is literally a spin off- of a spin off of minecraft, which based on my points made earlier, is probably why it hasnt seen much success. Besides these points, I may be considering this as a flop a little too early, considering that it was released not even a year before the making of this video, but my prediction is that it is going to fade further and further into obscurity, following the same fate as Minecraft dungeons.
And again, its not like this is a bad game or anything- it’s just that mojang has horribly advertised it and has limited its full potential by slapping the minecraft logo on it, so again, who knows? Maybe this game will have a revival… but i wouldnt count on it.
Our next topic is the first ever and possibly the greatest Minecraft spin off of all time, Minecraft story mode which was released in early 2016, and was aarguablly the best minecraft spin off ever made perfectly capturing the sandbox and adventure feel of minecraft- whilst implementing player creativity and choice whilst also having a great story, somewhat well-written characters and many different storylines that all converge on eeach other When I first played this when it came out it felt like a movie, it was just so well-developed and put together and I just loved it overall. This was very clearly reflected by the reception it got from the Minecraft community with it being the most successful minecraft spin off’s, by far with Minecraft story mode with it receiving lots of traction with the mineucraft community with many YouTuber cameos, playthroughs and hundreds of millions of views across youtube. with the game remaining relevant for many years after its release, and even up to this day!
Well… then you might say, why is this game on this list, its very clearly not a flop…
Well… this game wasnt as much of a flop for mojang… rather, it was a flop the main company that produced minecraft story mode, taletale games, which went out of business in 2018, mainly because of many financial issues, lackluster sales of minecraft storymode season 2 which performed terribly by the way and frankly… kinda sucked , mainly because it felt very disconnected from the original series and often had lazy writing and storytelling. Another thing I have to say is that the voice acting for both of these games kinda sucks, I rewatched it on netflix for this video and most of the voice acting sucks. These factors, along with telltale games struggling to find clients after minecraft, eventually led to the companies bankruptcy which led to the rights of minecraft story mode being sold to netflix. It isn't all bad news through because I have heard that this game studio has had kind of a revival with the company working alongside some other game studios recently.
Our final topic of this video isnt really a minecraft spin off, but im putting in as an hounorable mention because of it significant in the minecraft community, the game I am talking about is called “Hytale, made by the main executives of the most popular minecraft server of all time, called hypixel… you see the similarity… hypixel… hytale… yeah, you get it. Anyways, this game was announced in late 2018 and shaked the minecraft community mainly because of how similar it was to minecraft with many new features and hundreds of new things to do in the game like fully fleched out procedurally generated worlds with may different biomes, mobs, structures and boss battles, as well as some very advanced minigame and content creation features and just general gameplay improvements, all of this on top of what minecraft has to offer today. Many people were saying that this was going to be the game to finally overthrow minecraft as the trailer for this game quickly got tens of millions of views and much recognition within the minecraft youtube community.
Things all seemed to be going great for the first couple of months, with the developers of the game saying that it was going to be released in just a couple months to a couple years. But they were wayyy off.
Hytale was announced in 2018 and its 2024, and we still dont have any official release date, or anu updates on how the development is going after almost 6 years! with the development of this game being paused for multiple years at a time because of many internal and financial problems with the studio, as well as the fact that a game development studio as small as hypixel bit off a little more than they could chew with the features of the game considering that Minecraft took a team of people years and years to develop, and hypixed wanted to make this game with a smaller team of people, much less money, in just a few years, which froma n outside perspective, is kinda ridiculous. Another big issue with this game is how connected it is to Minecraft, considering how similar it looks, and how similar the game mechanics are and that even if it does end up releasing, it will always be known as that one copy of Minecraft instead of its own standalone game. I mean, I will have to admit. It looks like Mineclone 3D, the graphics in this look like a low-budget Minecraft- oh wait, hytale is a low-budget version of Minecraft. Hytale has seen a little bit of a revival recently as the developers have started developing it again after over a year, with the developers completely reworking the rendering engine, world generation, and the general progression of the game.
I think this game has a lot of potential and This game might have a revival when it's released, but who knows… only time will tell. I think a conclusion that we can draw from these 5 examples of every single Minecraft spin-off game failing in some sort of way is that you really can't do a spin-off of a game like Minecraft, minecraft is its own standalone game a limitless game known by no bounds where the player can play with no rules or limits- only being limited by the player's imagination. This is exactly why I don't think that there will never be a spin-off or maybe even another game like Minecraft. Ever. The failure of these games just amplifies the value of Minecraft as a game and why we should cherish that value… at least until Microsoft screws it up. Even More
I hope you liked this video, I worked very hard on it and i would appreciate some feedback in the comment section below.
